A reality of playing baseball and softball during a Michigan spring is the chance for weather to impact our schedule. Below are West Portage policies for various weather situations
Rain Throughout Day
Determination will be made after surveying the fields and reviewing the weather forecast. Our goal is to make a play/no play decision by 4:00 on the day of the game. Since we are biased to play, we may occasionally take longer in hopes that conditions improve. Email notifications will be sent and information posted on our Facebook page once a decision has been made to cancel (if there is no notification, assume we will play). MANAGERS SHOULD ALSO CONTACT PLAYERS WHEN GAMES ARE CANCELLED
Cold Weather
All games and practices will be cancelled if the temperature with wind chill is below 40 degrees (i.e. the 'feels like' temperature)l.
Thunder or Lightning
West Portage Little League follows MHSAA guidance with respect to our policy on thunder and lightning.
- When lightning is observed or thunder is heard, the contest must be suspended. The occurrence of lightning or thunder is not subject to interpretation or discussion — lightning is lightning; thunder is thunder
- Upon suspension, players and their families must move immediately to their vehicles and remain there until the all clear is announced
- The all clear will not be announced until lightning has been absent from the local sky and thunder has not been heard for 30 minutes
While at times frustrating, this is not a rule unique to West Portage. It is followed by MHSAA and all D2 little leagues. Our first priority is the safety of our players, coaches, spectators and employees.
